Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants

The molars and premolars are known to be the most susceptible to cavities. This is due to the presence of occlusal grooves on their upper surface, which could house thousands of microscopic bacteria. Over time, these microbes release acidic substances that can erode the enamel and decay the teeth. A simple and effective means of preventing cavities is using dental sealants.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are known to be one of the best ways to prevent cavities. The occlusal grooves, though only as wide as a single toothbrush bristle, could house a lot of microbes and food debris. Over time, the bacteria could release toxins and cause cavities. Hence, the best way to avoid this is to completely seal off the occlusal grooves and prevent the accumulation of microbes in them.

How are sealants done?

The dentist will examine the teeth and clean them thoroughly to remove tartar and food debris. Acrylic sealants will be prepared by matching it with the color of the enamel. It will be applied to the grooves in several layers, thereby covering the upper surface entirely and preventing the accumulation of microbes. Sealants are known to last for several years without any hassle, provided the child practices good oral habits.
