Endodontics

Endodontics

An endodontist is a dentist who undergoes a few extra years of training and specialization to treat diseases related to the dental pulp and other supporting structures of the patient’s teeth. An endodontist also helps diagnose facial pain and other problems associated with the orofacial structure. Before starting treatment, an endodontist will also explain to patients the importance of endodontic therapy.

Here we describe the general anatomy of the tooth structure. A tooth consists of several layers. The outermost layer is known as the enamel. The enamel is supported by the dentin which supports the inner layers of the tooth. The internal structure of the tooth consists of several connecting tissues, nerve endings, and dental pulp. This layer promotes the channel for nutrients to the tooth.

At times, due to the attack of infection-causing bacteria, the innermost layer of teeth known as the dental pulp tends to get infected. This infection causes damage to the tooth from the inside. Most patients may resort to the need for an extraction, but, endodontists can mend the infected tooth with the help of a root canal therapy.

Why is endodontic treatment essential?

Endodontic treatment becomes essential when teeth begin to suffer from severe inflammation or infection. Teeth that experience frequent infection could be due to severe cavities, cracked or chipped teeth, external injury, etc. With endodontic treatment, endodontists can treat problems from the root and help save a dying tooth.

What would an endodontic treatment involve?

An endodontic treatment would involve cleaning the dental canal by removing any infected tissues from the dental pulp. Once they are removed, the endodontist will seal the canal with the help of a dental filling. This will help prevent further entry of bacteria into the dental canal.

The endodontic treatment is safe, pain-free, and helps to save the tooth from extraction, preserving the natural tooth.
