Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment

Having strong and healthy teeth is a massive advantage. Being able to eat anything you wish without worrying about developing cavities can be an enormous load off your back. But, for this, the teeth need to be strong and healthy enough to prevent decay. Various minerals in the teeth help in this regard and also keep them from undergoing wear and chipping.

Fluoride is one of the essential minerals that protect the teeth from cavities. The human body receives its regular supply of Fluoride from the water we drink and toothpaste we use to brush our teeth. Sometimes, the amount of the mineral the body receives is not adequate, making the teeth weak and vulnerable to the microbes in the mouth. This increases their chances of developing cavities drastically, thereby putting one’s oral health at serious risk.

Can the teeth lose Fluoride?

Sometimes, even if your child receives an adequate amount of Fluoride, the teeth could end up with a deficiency of the mineral. This is due to a process called demineralization. It occurs when the Fluoride and Calcium get washed away from the porous structure of the teeth. It is caused when they consume a lot of acidic foods and drinks. The accumulated plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth release acids when they feed on the food debris in the mouth. This can lead to demineralization, as well.

How to naturally replenish the Fluoride levels?

Over the past few decades, Fluoride is being added to the natural water sources to bring up the levels to a certain standard. About 80% of the US population receives drinking water enriched with Fluoride, a significant step in cavity prevention, and strengthening the teeth. In addition to this, brushing the teeth twice every day with a Fluoride-rich toothpaste helps to replenish the Fluoride levels. A Fluoride-rich mouthwash also yields good results in this regard.

What is Fluoride treatment?

If the dentist feels that your child’s teeth are too weak and exposed to cavities, they may suggest a Fluoride treatment. It is a preventive treatment therapy that is performed to increase the Fluoride content in the teeth. The procedure is performed by directly applying a topical Fluoride paste on the teeth. The dentist may also recommend fluoride supplements in the form of pills or drops if required.

What are the advantages of getting a Fluoride treatment?

  • Significantly increases the immunity of the teeth against cavities.
  • The procedure is quite safe and straightforward.
  • It is inexpensive.
  • It reduces the occurrence of demineralization.
